Pop culture heroes are having a very busy year.
In September 2026, Batman and Kamen Rider ZERO-ONE became an official team in Batman x Kamen Rider ZERO-ONE: LEGENDS UNITE, a new project from DC, Toei, Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, and Bandai.
At the same time, Marvel is preparing for a very different kind of team-up: The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe #1. Add the growing list of crossovers in Fortnite, plus the ongoing excitement around Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, and 2026 is quickly looking like the year of the crossover.
But why do some crossovers feel meaningful while others feel like simple brand combinations? The answer may be found in what these characters have in common: masks, second chances, mentorship, legacy, and the ability to change without losing their identity.
Batman and Kamen Rider ZERO-ONE Unite
The Batman and Kamen Rider project was announced on September 19 at the “Rule the Night” Batman Day event in Tokyo.
The project will include:
- An original DC comic featuring Batman and Kamen Rider ZERO-ONE
- Related merchandise developed by Bandai
- A global rollout aimed at Japan and selected international markets
- Future announcements expected at events such as Tokyo Comic Con
The full title, Batman x Kamen Rider ZERO-ONE: LEGENDS UNITE, presents the crossover as a Japan–United States superhero event. It also arrives during Kamen Rider’s 55th anniversary year.
The comic’s writer is reported to be Kenny Porter, with Japanese artist tokitokoro attached to the project. However, DC and Toei have not yet announced the release date, format, issue count, or complete plot.
That is important because the project is still in its announcement phase. Fans know the team-up is real, but many details remain secret.
Why Batman and ZERO-ONE?
The most obvious connection is that both heroes have powerful civilian identities.
Bruce Wayne leads Wayne Enterprises. Aruto Hiden, the hero of Kamen Rider ZERO-ONE, becomes the president of Hiden Intelligence, an artificial intelligence company. Both characters balance corporate responsibility with the dangerous work of protecting people.
There is also a strong thematic connection:
- Both heroes operate behind a mask.
- Both use advanced technology.
- Both fight threats connected to modern society.
- Both carry the weight of an organization or legacy.
- Both are leaders who must inspire others.
Kamen Rider ZERO-ONE was the first Reiwa-era Kamen Rider series, airing from 2019 to 2020. Its story focuses on artificial intelligence, human identity, and the fear that technology can be used for harm. Those themes make ZERO-ONE a natural match for Batman, whose stories often explore surveillance, crime, science, and the consequences of human choices.
The partnership also has historical meaning. Toei producer Shinichiro Shirakura pointed out that early Kamen Rider villains included monsters inspired by American superhero imagery. Kamen Rider has crossed paths with other major heroes before, but Batman and Kamen Rider officially meeting has taken more than five decades to happen.

Batman asks what a person can do with fear, wealth, and discipline. ZERO-ONE asks what happens when technology begins to challenge the meaning of humanity. Aruto must protect people while also deciding whether artificial beings can possess dignity, emotion, and a right to exist.
His hero traits include:

- Courage in the face of technological danger
- A belief that the future can be improved
The bright design and fast-moving action of Kamen Rider ZERO-ONE make the character accessible, but the story underneath is more serious. It is about trust, identity, corporate power, and the responsibility that comes with innovation.
That makes him a strong partner for Batman. Batman brings detective work and caution. ZERO-ONE brings hope and a belief in progress. Their differences could create the real drama of the comic.
Power Rangers Connection: Tommy Oliver and the Green Ranger
For Power Rangers fans, the strongest connection between Batman and ZERO-ONE may be the idea of a hero carrying a complicated legacy.
That brings us to Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger.

Tommy begins his story as an enemy. Rita Repulsa places him under a spell, gives him the Dragon Power Coin, and sends him against the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
The five-part “Green With Evil” storyline makes Tommy a serious threat. He defeats Rangers, attacks the Command Center, and uses the Dragonzord against Angel Grove.
Then everything changes.
The Rangers destroy the Sword of Darkness and break Rita’s control. Instead of treating Tommy as permanently evil, they give him a chance to make a different choice. Tommy becomes the sixth Ranger, eventually losing his Green powers before returning as the White Ranger and team leader.
His redemption arc works because it includes consequences. Tommy does not simply switch sides and forget what happened. He struggles with the loss of his powers, the damage caused while under Rita’s control, and the responsibility of proving that he can be trusted.
That is why Tommy remains such an important Power Rangers character:
- He is a former villain who earns forgiveness.
- He becomes a student before becoming a mentor.
- He loses one identity and grows into another.
- He represents the connection between the original Japanese footage and the American Saban-era adaptation.
- His story shows that a hero’s legacy can include mistakes.
The Toei–Saban lineage matters here. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers introduced many American viewers to action, costumes, monsters, and transformation concepts rooted in Japanese tokusatsu. Kamen Rider comes from the same broad pop culture tradition, even though its storytelling and character histories are different.
Tommy helps connect those worlds for Power Rangers fans.
The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe
The other major crossover making noise this month is The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe #1.
One scheduling note is worth mentioning: early reports and fan discussions have referenced September 30, but current solicitation coverage lists the oversized one-shot for September 23, 2026. September 30 is connected to several Muppet-themed variant covers for other Marvel books.
The one-shot celebrates the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show and includes stories involving:
- Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, and Rowlf
- Spider-Man, Wolverine, Black Panther, and Emma Frost
- Bruce Banner and Hank Pym at Muppet Labs
- Doctor Strange and the Swedish Chef
- Pigs in Space alongside Rocket Raccoon and Groot
The project works because Marvel and the Muppets already share a love of performance, comedy, exaggerated personalities, and self-aware storytelling. The Muppets do not need to become darker to fit Marvel. Marvel does not need to stop being heroic to fit the Muppets.
The fun comes from letting each side remain itself.

Why the 2026 Crossover Boom Works
These projects are part of a larger trend.
Fortnite has brought together characters and worlds connected to Kingdom Hearts, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Persona 5, and other major franchises. Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and the continuing conversation around Secret Wars are also built around large-scale character combinations.
The best crossovers usually have at least one of these ingredients:
- A shared theme: Batman and ZERO-ONE both explore technology and responsibility.
- A meaningful contrast: The Muppets bring comedy into Marvel’s serious superhero world.
- A strong legacy: Kamen Rider’s 55th anniversary gives the team-up historical weight.
- A clear emotional hook: Tommy Oliver shows that heroes can change.
- Respect for both audiences: Each property keeps its personality instead of becoming a generic mash-up.
In 2026, fandom is less divided by borders between comics, television, games, toys, and movies. Fans move between all of these worlds every day. A Power Rangers fan may also follow Batman. A Kamen Rider viewer may collect Marvel figures. A Fortnite player may discover Kingdom Hearts through a skin or in-game event.
That is what these crossovers say about pop culture now: fans do not just want separate universes. They want conversations between them.
And the characters that last are the ones with enough depth to survive the meeting.
